US Regions of Health

Health is cultural before it is clinical. An invisible thread ties you to a region of health — and you can belong to it wherever you live.

America’s six health cultures

Innovators

Northeast & Pacific hubs — technology, trust in science, the commons.

Industrial

The manufacturing heartland — labor, the bellwether states.

Growth

The Sunbelt — fast‑growing, Texas and the Southwest.

Resilience

The South & Appalachia — loyalty, faith, the burden carried.

Frontier

The Mountain West & Plains — distance, ranching, self‑reliance.

First Nations

All Native & Alaska Native tribal lands — recognized as a distinct region, given parity.

Five culturally aligned regions — and First Nations, recognized as a distinct region with parity.

The evidence

Culture is medicine.

Regional culture is among the most powerful predictors of health. The American Nations model finds 3‑to‑5‑year life‑expectancy gaps between regional cultures, and predicts diabetes, obesity, disability, and even COVID‑19 mortality. For Native and Alaska Native communities, culture is not a variable to control for — it is the substrate of health.
